June 2003

Dear 181/182/183 Owner,

Since there seem to have been several changes of ownership over the last few months, may I say a sincere "Welcome" to those new owners receiving this (irregular) Newsletter for the first time. The weather seems to be steadily improving, so there may be a few opportunities to get that hood down at last!

Events
1. Sunday, June 29th - VW Expo at The Hop Farm, Beltring, near Paddock Wood, Kent. (On the A228, leave M.20 at Jct.4 and follow the Hop Farm signs. A long-running event organised by the ABVWC, but the first time in a new venue)
Unusually I'm running two displays, a "Military VWs" display as well as the normal "Register" display, so if you know anyone who's got a military VW of ANY sort - Type 1, 2, 25, 82, 87, 166 as well as 181/183 - please try to persuade them to bring it along. FREE ENTRY for all military vehicles and drivers, but they will need to get a windscreen sticker and wristband from me in advance to obtain the free entry.
For the general Register display (which for this purpose includes ex-military 181/3s which don't look military any more) you also need a windscreen sticker, to enable the stewards to route you straight to an inside display stand, rather than into the general car-park, but I'm afraid you will have to pay for driver and passengers. (Adults £5, £3 for children 5-15.) Free overnight camping if you want to make a weekend of it!

(Since I listed other events right through to September last time, I'll just summarise the events and dates below- ring me if you want any more details.

2. BVF, Sat-Sun July 5-6th at Three Counties Showground SSW of Worcester.
3. War and Peace Show, July 16-20th. Also at Hop Farm, Beltring.
4. London Volksfest, Sun August 3rd. North Weald airfield, leave M.11 at Jct.7

If you and a few friends are attending a local VW show which is not listed above, especially the two below, let me know if you want to borrow the Register banner, and a supply of literature.
5. VW Action, Fri-Sun, September 5-7th. East of England Showground, nr. Peterborough.
6. Essex VW Show, Sun Sept 7th. Basildon.

7. Apparently it is fifty years since VW started importing cars into Britain, so the VWOC(GB) and the Leics. and Warwicks VWOC are commemorating this fact with a special display at the Town and Country Show over the August Bank Holiday, Sat-Mon August 23-25th, at the National .Agricultural Centre, Stoneleigh (near Coventry).
If any owners of a Trekker (or earlier 182) would like to attend this event, this seems to be the most appropriate contribution we could make, since this is the only member of the 181 family imported specially into Britain. Anyone with a "show-worthy" vehicle, and preferably able to attend the whole weekend, please contact Rob Loughrey direct on 01455 239723 for details.

Reports on earlier Events
1. VolksWorld Show, Sandown Park, March 22-23. For once the weather was marvellous, unbelievable for March! Modest 181 turnout, including a "new" 181 just in from Germany, in Chelsea colours! (For sale, if anyone's interested, around £1800.)

2. Stanford Hall, May 4th. Unusually, no-one claimed the spare ticket, so I was on the stand on my own for the first time I can remember. Weather again beautiful, and several friendly faces with various stories as to why they hadn't come in their 181s!

3. Stonor Park, June 1st..A varied display of two military 181s, a lovely 182 Trekker, and a 183, with a lot of visitors looking in, around and under them throughout the day.

4. International KubelTreffen, Germany, June 6-9th Due to work commitments, I had to call off this trip at short notice, the first time for seven years, so regrettably nothing to report!

Spares
If you asked me to get you any spares in specially, and haven't heard anything since, please ring to remind me! Whilst I have got one or two orders outstanding (Jem, Tom L.), there was someone else wanting rear wings, and I can't find any note of who it was!!
If you need any advice on spares (or anything else relating to 181/2/3s), feel free to ring me anytime (but preferably NOT between 830 &.9 in the evening!)

At one of the shows, someone told me that Hoods Galore in South London are no longer trading, so anyone wanting a black hood will now have to look further than a London phone no!. One of my German contacts and the Thing Shop in Arizona are both advertising them, but both are carefully omitting to quote the price!

Chassis Nos.
My database is still missing a few Chassis Nos., so if there is a coloured band beside this paragraph, THIS MEANS YOU. Please let me know, to update the records (and it could be vital if you ever want certain spares which are age-specific). The Chassis No. is given on the aluminium plate where you lift the bonnet, repeated on the chassis under the rear seat, and on the V5 It's a 10-digit number beginning 18 ……… (Add the next digit to 1969-70, and you've got the vehicle's age, if you didn't know it already. This may NOT necessarily coincide with the registration suffix-letter if incorrect information was given at the time of first registration - I've got one vehicle with an "A" suffix (1963!), and another with an "F", whereas the earliest should be an "H" (for 69-70). Some of the Trekkers took a long time to sell, so their suffixes range from N to R, i.e. more than a year later than the date of manufacture. If you want to obtain a correct age-related plate, the local VRO will issue one free on request, but it will cost you a new pair of number-plates.)
(NB If you have an Iltis, only the earlier models have this 10-digit format, they moved to a longer format including letters in the early 1980s.)

Trivia
The usual request, if you've sold your 181/2/3, PLEASE let me know who the new owner is, and pass this Newsletter onto him/her.

(Because of the rush to get this out in time for VW Expo, I am not printing the current state of the Register on the reverse, as I usually do.)

Till next time,
