For Sale: 1973 VW Thing in exceptional
condition. It now has 31,500 original miles, drives great, and
all I have had to do is the front brakes and replace the alternator.
I purchased it here a couple years ago from the son of the original
owner. Here is what he wrote: "Originally purchased in 73
by my father who drove if for about 3 years prior to parking
it. He sold it to my uncle and it wound up in his barn for over
20 years. Another uncle dug it out and refurbished it. New paint
job to match the original, new canvas and screens. He even had
the custom stickers redone. Looks like it did when dad brought
it home 31 years ago. For the mechanicals the electrical system
was completely redone, new exhaust, brakes and shocks. The engine
didn't need anything. With only 31,000+ miles it runs great."

For Sale: Very nice 1942 Kubelwagen.
Chassisnr: 2-015272. It was restored some 10 years ago, so it`s
an older restoration. It was imported in 1955 by a German guy
that passed away a few months ago. It has a 1600 engine, but
comes with an original 1100 engine as well. he paint is not original.
It comes with 5 original 16 inch rims. It doesn`t have a split
windshield, there is a piece of metal glued to the windshield.
It has the original jack, I don`t know if the shovel etc are
original. The speedometer is not original and I don`t know about
the steering wheel. The telephone and the black out light are
from the US army. The top is complete but needs to be fixed.
The head lights are Bosch (right hand side) and Hella (left side).
Three out of 4 doorhandles are original. It`s a driver and comes
with an 1131 engine as well. I am flexible on the price! The
first one to make me a good offer and sends me a down payment
gets the car, simple as that. I am asking 25.000 USD, but that
is negociable! Email

For Sale: I am selling this 1973
car for my mother. My father bought this car brand new from a
dealership in Cedar Rapids, IA in 1973. It has the original brochure
and window sticker. The brochure is for 1974 as they were out
of the 1973 version. This is a stock vehicle with several dealer
options including: roll bar and rims. It is in near showroom
condition. It hias been garage kept and rarely driven for 20
years. Vehicle has the original paint and looks great. The rims
were repainted the original color. There are a few crazing type
cracks and a few small chips in the paint on the left front bumper
area. I have 24 photos to share. Everything works except th eodometer
which stopped around 1998 at 18,915 miles. I estimate the miles
at 20K. There is proof of the old stopped odometer on a maintenance
receipt from May 1998 that shows the miles at 18,915. The spark
plugs and wires were replaced recently, but the engine still
needs adjusting. There is only one window. The other 3 were taken
in one of it's few nights out of the garage. The window is stored
in the trunk. The original stock bag of tools are in th ebag
in trunk. Original spare tire. Original factory gas heater, which
is a rare find. Original mats are there in excellent condition.
They are covered with cut pieces of carpet. The original "The
Thing" sticker is on both sides of the vehicle. It has some
crazing from age. New tires were put on in 2000. It was towed
to its current location in Spokane, WA. This car has no rust.
The floorboard was painted with rust inhibitor 25 years ago.
There was some work done on the front end when my teenage brother
drove it into a workbench in our garage. Factory options include:
roll bar, Mag wheels. The seats are original with not rips, cracks
or tears. Thus car us in exceptional condition. We are not interested
in trading for other vehicles. Please request pictures and I
will try to get them sent over for posting as well. $15,000 Email

For Sale: 1973 VW Thing. I bought
my Thing brand new in 1973 by special ordering it from my local
VW dealer. This was the first Thing to be officially delivered
to Bob Smith VW of Hollywood, California. The car has only 90K
miles from new ALL DOCUMENTED by the myriad of receipts which
I still have (see photo). I still have the original window sticker,
sales brochure, sales contract and salesman's business card,
owners manual, photo of the car at our wedding, diagnostics manual,
VW dealer regular service receipts for everything including the
accessories I ordered with it: AM/FM radio with 2 under-dash
speakers (these have the name "Volkswagen" in big letters
on them), white fiberglass hard top, Thing floor mats, front
bush bar, tow bar, rear spare tire carrier, spare NOS front bumper,
mesh headlight covers, etc. I recently had T.C.s VW Thing expert
look over the car to see what it needed before selling it and
give it a tune up so that it is "up to speed". He was
amazed at how original the car was and mentioned a few items
which I should list as still original on the car. These items
apparantly go missing or get replaced, but not on my car. They
are as follows: ORIGINAL still on the car from 1973: european
delivery type 070 distributor, diagnostic hook-up loom in tact,
gas heater complete with all correct parts, all black inspection
plugs around the inside of the body, original top latches, 73
only defroster light, dash shift pattern sticker, VW stamped
original exhaust, skid plates under the motor, front and rear
bumpers, even the 4 hub caps are the original heavy German ones-
not cheap reproductions, all 5 rims are date-matched, 20 Thing-only
lug nuts, headlight bulbs, all lenses, even the spare tire is
the original spare (and dated). The key is the Thing only original
too. All the paint is original with no accidents, NO RUST OF
ANY KIND, no replaced panels and no touch ups; it is what it
is with nothing to hide. The convertible top is the original
one but the back window is shot. The top has the curved plastic
protectors which sit on the end of the folded down frame. I still
have the grey vinyl windshield protector which I have never even
installed. I also have the window curtain bag but it is stained.
The actual window curtains are like new as I rarely, if ever
used them. The hard top is in good condition but the right side
window is cracked and should be replaced. I'm told it is just
a plain flat piece which has no VW markings on it so any glass
shop could replace it. All the rubber seals are excellent too.
The limited amount of chrome on the car is perfect, like the
door handles, side mirrors, turn signal tops and radio knobs.
Sadly the windshield is now cracked as I put the hardtop up side
down inside the car to deliver it to my Nephew ( who is selling
it for me) and the top slid forward into the windshield thus
cracking it. 32 year with out any damage and the day we decide
to sell it we cracked the windshield! I did not replace it because
it still has the original access sticker from the Sam Goldwyn
Studios when I worked on STAR WARS in 1977, and the sticker is
so cool. I replaced the tires last week with the closest set
I could get to the originals but left the 1973 original on the
back. The rims lost all their paint so this would be the only
thing that has been altered from new- the rims were powder-coated
silver as they were new and the new tires mounted ($1000), but
I put the original hub caps back on. I also replaced the visors,
but I kept the original metal mounting pieces. The antenna broke
off and I replaced it too, but I kept the original broken one.
The car drives like a dream and needs nothing at all. It is reliable
and just as fun as it was thirty years ago. My original California
personal plates do not come with it though. The title is good
and it is a real "pink" slip even in the original envelope
from the california DMV from Sacramento dated March 22, 1974.
It came later as I made payments on the car until then. My nephew
is helping me sell the car so email him any questions you may
have. The car is available to check out and test drive in Santa
Monica. I might have some photos of the Thing outside the set
of STAR WARS we filmed in the airplane hangars in Van Nuys, I'll
take a look. Thanks. $10,400 Email
